The Warwickshire Bears beat Yorkshire Phoenix by six wickets to stay in the title hunt.

The nottingham v warwickshire is a match between the Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club and the Warwickshire County Cricket Club. It is one of the most popular games in England, with over 1 million people watching it live every year.

On his debut red-ball appearance for the Bears at Headingley, Tim Bresnan, who spent 19 years with Yorkshire, came back to haunt the Tykes.

Day four of the LV= County Championship Division One, Emerald Headingley, Leeds:

Scorecard

Warwickshire defeated Yorkshire by 106 runs to keep their County Championship championship aspirations alive while putting an end to the dreams of their opponents.

On day four, the Tykes began on 50-3, needing 224 to win, but were bowled out for only 117 in the first session.

With the third ball of the day, Gary Ballance edged Chris Woakes to second slip, while ex-Yorkshire seamer Tim Bresnan took six catches in the innings.

Warwickshire have moved up to second place and will host Somerset next week.

The Bears have 55 points going into the final round of fixtures, three and a half points behind Division One leaders Hampshire, who play fellow contenders Lancashire on Tuesday.

Nottinghamshire, who are in fourth position and have a chance to win the title in what promises to be an exciting conclusion, play Yorkshire at home.

Yorkshire must win the match and hope for other results to go their way in order to finish second and compete in the Bob Willis Trophy final on September 28 at Lord’s.

After Tuesday’s downpour, the Bears are ready to strike.

When the third day’s play was rained off, both Yorkshire and Warwickshire were left disappointed in their quest for victory.

The visitors, on the other hand, made up for lost time in Leeds, where the surface looked difficult to bat on from the moment the Tykes won the toss and decided to field on Sunday.

Following the crucial early dismissal of Ballance, the home wickets fell regularly as veteran Bresnan proved a safe pair of hands in the slips, collecting a low edge from Harry Brook, a shot off the toe-end of the bat from Jordan Thompson – who provided the most resistance with 18 from 52 balls – and a nick from Steven Patterson.

A catch by the former England all-rounder would have tied the first-class record most catches in an innings, which is now held by ex-Bears all-rounder Rikki Clarke, who took nine against Lancashire at Aigburth in 2011.

Bresnan also caught Dom Bess lbw on Monday, in addition to his crucial second-inning 36 with the bat.

England all-rounder Woakes, Liam Norwell, and Craig Miles all took three wickets in their first Championship appearances in three years.

Ben Coad chipped Norwell to midwicket for the last wicket, sealing Yorkshire’s fate.

In a low-scoring encounter, Michael Burgess’ 66 in the first innings for Warwickshire proved vital, as his team now has a genuine opportunity of becoming county champions for the first time since 2012.

‘Woakes wants to play next week,’ says the source.

Andrew Gale, Yorkshire coach:

“It was frustrating to finish the way we did this morning because those that play against Yorkshire know we’re a difficult team to defeat.” We were a little soft in not extending the game beyond lunchtime. Warwickshire have bowled effectively throughout the match.

“In the first innings, we should have bowled them out a little cheaper, but I was more unhappy with the batting in the first innings.” We should have gotten even, if not a 50-point advantage. I felt 200 was a good number, but we didn’t put in as much effort as we might have. That’s where I believe the game got away from us.

“To win trophies, you have to seize crucial moments in games, and the first innings was one of them. We could have put the game away if we had batted better. We’re on our way, and we’ve made some progress this year. It’s another positive step forward.”

Mark Robinson, Warwickshire’s first-team coach, said on Radio 5’s live sports extra:

“I’m delighted with the group. We showed a lot of character in bouncing back from last week’s slow death. We squandered a game against Hampshire that we should have won.

“We had three chances to put it to rest and we didn’t.” And the fear or worry is that this match will have a hangover. We subsequently lost the toss and had to bat in the dark for both innings.

“However, we demonstrated the spirit and talent necessary to come out on top in what turned out to be a significant victory. All you ever want is to build yourself up so that you can go into the last game of the season with a chance to win it all.”

“He loves the club and wants to play,” Chris Woakes said of his availability for next week. It’s only a question of whether England will let him play. We’re hoping that his recent lack of cricket will enable him to play.

“We hope that the ECB would enable someone who is a true Bear but hasn’t played much cricket to have a chance to assist his side win a Championship. Those kinds of chances don’t come around very frequently.”
