The 22-year-old American Shelby Rogers, ranked No. 934 in the world, upset No. 1 Ash Barty Saturday to advance to the third round of the US Open.
No. 1-ranked player in the world, and currently, the world’s top-ranked player, Ash Barty. Her three main competitors in the US Open this week, Naomi Osaka, CoCo Vandeweghe and Karolina Pliskova, all crushed her at this year’s Australian Open and the past two years in the French Open. She had a chance to complete a Grand Slam and set a record in the process, but lost in the quarterfinals to the unseeded American Shelby Rogers.

NEW YORK (WABC) — At the start of the US Open, there were 22 American women in the draw. There were emerging talents, adolescent sensations, and even a previous champion among them.
On Saturday night, though, there was only one countrywoman left, and she was none of those things.
Shelby Rogers, 28, was the last woman from the United States standing victorious after beating world No. 1 and two-time major winner Ash Barty in a thrilling third-set tiebreaker.
Rogers was down 5-2 in the last set, and her destiny among her peers seemed to be sealed. It seemed that there would be no American women in the round of 16 for the first time in the Open Era’s history.
But, point after point, and then game by game, Rogers fought her way back into the match with stunning variety and a never-say-die attitude fueled by the adoring home fans. She placed her hands over her mouth in amazement before lifting her arms over her head in joy as the last point of the 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (5) match was won. She couldn’t stop smiling as she made her way around Arthur Ashe Stadium’s court, waving and thanking people in attendance.

The grin had not faded at her press conference more than an hour later.
Rogers told reporters, “I am shocked.” “My heart rate is still very high. With that victory, I’m ecstatic.”
Several of the best American women, including Serena Williams, Sofia Kenin, and Jennifer Brady, were unable to compete in the US Open due to injury or sickness, and few expected Rogers, who is ranked No. 43 in the world, to fill the void. With players like a resurgent Sloane Stephens and a rising star in Coco Gauff in the mix, it’s unlikely.
While Rogers has mostly gone unnoticed, his win on Saturday wasn’t entirely anticipated. Rogers has had some of her finest wins since the tour resumed last year after a five-month hiatus due to the epidemic. After beating No. 6 seed Petra Kvitova in the fourth round of the 2020 US Open, she went on to reach her first quarterfinal after eight prior appearances, defeating Serena Williams in the first event back after the hiatus. She lost in the quarterfinals against eventual winner Naomi Osaka, but the experience deep into the second week provided her renewed confidence.

To begin the 2021 season, she made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time, and she earned a career-high ranking of No. 40 during the summer.
Despite this, she had a 0-5 lifetime record against Barty, who has been one of the tour’s most consistent players, winning five championships in 2021. Rogers has never had an answer for Barty in their four meetings this season.
On Saturday, though, she took advantage of the prior encounters.
“I believe coming on the court tonight, I told myself I didn’t want to lose like I had the previous five times against her,” Rogers said. “All I did was try to do things a little differently.” I mixed in some high balls in the first set, and I was patient with her slicing since she doesn’t miss many. That is something I am fully aware of.
“She certainly upped her level in the second and third [sets], as she always does. She is, after all, the best player in the planet. But I began to want to smash the ball a little harder, to see if I might locate any winners. That’s the kind of tennis I like, and it’s what she wants me to do. She intends to reroute and finesse me around the court while waiting for me to make a mistake. Tonight, I was simply pleased and proud of myself for fixing an issue, if you will… It everything worked out in the end.”

At the conclusion of the match, the two had a cordial hug, and they even exchanged a pleasant welcome when Barty was leaving her press conference and Rogers was entering to speak. Despite several heartbreaking losses, including a knee injury and 2018 surgery that kept her out for almost a year, Barty said she was unhappy with the night’s result but couldn’t be too upset to lose to Rogers.
“It’s a bummer that there’s a victor and loser every day in tennis,” Barty remarked, “but you don’t mind losing to certain individuals occasionally.” “I believe Shelby is one of them for me, [because of] her personality and character.”
On Monday, Rogers will play 18-year-old phenom Emma Raducanu for a place in her second-straight quarterfinal. She had never advanced to the semifinals of a major before, but she wasn’t thinking about that Saturday, or about being the country’s last chance in the women’s draw. Rogers intends to tackle each day and each opponent one at a time.
“I’m not thinking about [being] the last one in the draw because there are a lot of other players in the draw who aren’t from America who I’m hoping to beat,” Rogers said. “I’m simply going to go on. Tomorrow I have doubles, so I’ll concentrate on that before moving on to the next singles match.”
It’s hard to fathom, but Shelby Rogers, ranked No. 394 in the world, is currently ranked No. 3 in the Ladies’ Singles Rankings—and has been for four years. Rogers shocked the tennis world when she upset top ranked Ash Barty, winning 6-4, 6-0 in the second round of the US Open on Monday afternoon..
